I heard once that Gene Hackman was so nuts back in the '70s (and maybe he still is), that at the end of each day of shooting The French connection, he would immediately walk off the set and go wandering drunk about the steets of New York, picking random fistfights with people in bars. He apparantly told people who asked him "I have to go let off some steam".
