American Gangster

Directed by: Ridley Scott
Screenplay by: Steven Zaillian
Based on the article by: Mark Jacobson
Cinematography by: Harris Savides
Year: 2007

Both Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe turn in the most complex and intense characters they've played in years. However, the film is at the mercy of the lengthy and unbalanced pacing of the plot. Yes, stylistically, it's a combination of pretty much every GREAT cop/gangster movie ever made: Serpico, Heat, The French Connection, Scarface, The Departed, Goodfellas... And has the same classic themes (ie. cop / criminal are 2 sides of the same coin), but it will probably be viewed in time as merely a GOOD gangster film, and not a GREAT one.

3.5 out of 5
